Portland Transport Face to Face?

I occassionally run into members of the Portland Transport community (those of you who read and comment) out in the real world at events like the recent Streetcar extension openning ceremonies. I enjoy these opportunities to put a face with an e-mail address or screen name.

Which makes me wonder if it wouldn’t be fun to get the community together occassionally in the real world, not just in the virtual world. This could be part social, part policy.

For example, the Columbia River Crossing project is doing community meetings on request. We could get together, maybe at a brewpub or coffee house, having a CRC session, and hang out afterwards, perhaps talking about future directions for Portland Transport?

What do you think? Drop a comment if you’re interested, and if we appear to have critical mass, I’ll work on logistics. Feel free to suggest venues.

  1. I would like that. Widmer has nice a meeting room at their north Portland/Interstate facility.

What would be important is that no-one and no subject monopolize the event.

I would also suggest that attendies could bring position papers on subjects of discussion for anyone to take home.

A possible discussion could be held on Weight Value Decission Processing and why greater weighting could be given on different subjects of discussion in the transportation planning process.

This would be attempt to filter out individual value structures and better understand why additional weighting can be given to a subject in a mini debate with strict time limits set.

  3. I would like that too. It is very enjoyable to talk about Portlands transportation options and future. Ever since last summer when HS Rail was voted out of the options (some of us hope for a straight, fast, corridor for Amtrak through the bottleneck that is Portland), I let one of the chairpersons know that I couldn’t be at meetings that ignored the opportunity to save the billion on a HSR crossing.

Again, getting together on “portlandtransport” issues would be great.

  4. I’m all about chillin over a beer, or anywhere really. Especially the more I get involved in the whole transit issues of the region.

Just lemme know when n where and I’m there.

  5. And remember, Widmer is just two blocks from the Interstate MAX Yellow Line’s Albina/Mississippi Station. The 1 (soon to be 35) Greeley, 33 Fremont and 85 Swan Island also stop at that station. Interstate Avenue has bike lanes as well, as does Russell Street to the upper end of Lower Albina…an interesting area that is seeing some long time industrial concerns selling out…Tarr Oil and Becker, opening up several blocks for what?…most of the area in zoned industrial except right along Russell Street. City Council has approved the Russell Street streetscape plan which is next in line after Killingsworth for PDC funding. It includes curb extensions that work for trucks.

  6. Off topic.

Lenny, very interesting. Two years ago on oregonstadiumcampaign.com I saw a pub/hostel/resturant/condo non-car alley way design for a gritty extension of the Entertainment District (Rose Quarter) just North of the Blanchard site.

Has there been conversations about any zoning changes in the Lower Albina area?

  7. I too would be interested in joining a discussion group. Would also throw out the Lucky Lab (either NW or SE), or somewhere in the Central Eastside. Probably don’t need a seperate room if it is a small enough group.

  8. Anywhere is fine with me…except the Acropolis, Black Cat or Sellwood Inn. There are already enough drunk drivers on my street and it would make me look bad at the Neighborhood Association.
