Boston Did it, Could Portland?

The City of Boston has adopted a policy that all heavy trucks used by firms contracting with the City must have side-guards to protect cyclists from going under the wheels in the event of a collision.

Sounds like a great component of Vision Zero to me!

  1. The photo of the Boston garbage truck shows a very sturdy cage system, perhaps designed to stop a car. Seems overbuilt to deflect a cyclist. Yet, it doesn’t extend close enough to the ground, either. Also, instead of a smooth panel, it’s a cage that might actually snag the handlebars. Are there any other examples?
