Walkable Happiness


This USA Today article points to a study that suggests that people who live in walkable neighborhoods are happier:

They found those in neighborhoods with higher Walk Score ratings reported being happier and healthier and more apt to volunteer, work on community projects or simply entertain friends at home.

  1. This is valid as far as it goes and obviously walkable neighborhoods feel great to me personally. But I’m dubious about the implied causality. Seems as if walkability -> high home prices -> high SES -> health, happiness, volunteering, etc. No need for a strong direct link, right?

    Looks like the full report is behind a paywall, unfortunately, so it’s hard to know whether they tried to correct for income.
