Transit Tracker by Txt Msg
We've offered a variant of this for years, but I'm glad to see to it go mainstream from TriMet.

Ha. I suggested this to someone from TriMet's GIS group about 5 years ago.

And I've seen people on places like Twitter wish for it, to which I've pointed out it was available (and Portland Transport's not the only one).
But one thing: They mentioned there being an ad at the end. Do Portland Transport's and the other ones do that? It might be more cumbersome and slower, but an alternative free way to do it would be by e-mail, going text message to e-mail and then e-mail to text message.

TriMet tried that solution and it was much too slow. Not always, of course, but enough that it was unusable for this kind of information.
