John E. Says:
Is there a segment on "TOD's gone wild, The Round"?
Or "TOD without transit, Villebois"?
How about "New TOD's for old transit, Rockwood"?
"TOD's for BIG BOX strip malls, Cascade Satation"?
"TOD's without public subsidy, impossible"

Urbanized Areas:
Atlanta Mean Travel Time to Work (minutes): 30.5
Portland Mean travel time to work (minutes): 24.1
Los Angeles Mean travel time to work (minutes): 28.2

Is Atlanta still looking appealing to car/sprawl only people? Just curious. There's pros and cons to both cities, but usually the pro-pave the earth crowd cites "congestion" issues regarding Portland, but don't realize just how good they have it.

JK: Some points:
1. It is NOT about density because LA is twice as dense as Portland and has a longer commute time.
2. It is NOT about density, because LA is denser than Atlanta. And has a shorter commute time.
3. Then there is this detail:
......Atlanta: ......29.0 total, car 29.5, transit 52.5
......Portland:.... 22.6 total, car 22.4, transit 41.9
......LA: ............27.0 total, car 27.3, transit 47.0
So, if you don’t like long commute times, whatever you do DON’T take transit
(from Tom Rubin, CPA, Transit system auditor, former CFO of LA transit): All data is from the American Community Survey for 2005-2007. Using data for a three-year period is not only a larger database, but it helps get rid of any short-term distortions.

Time is a key issue that I think many people too quickly dismiss in the transit conversation, and why I personally am not a big fan of streetcars that share street lanes or even buses that sit idling in traffic. There's only so much time, and if driving saves you a bunch of time even with hunting for parking, most people are going to drive. I like Max, but I wish there were express Max trains for the same reason.
