An Interesting Suggestion from Congressman DeFazio

Lost in the hubub last week around Light Rail and Streetcar, here's an interesting suggestion made by the Congressman: replenish the Highway Trust Fund with a transfer tax on crude oil securities.

Replenish the Highway Trust Fund?

First quit hijacking a part of it for transit.

Thanks

I didn't know guys with guns came around and took the money. I thought the funding ratios were established by congress.

The pen is mightier than the sword, or so they say. If anything can be learned from Bernie Madoff, much more money can be stolen with a nice pen than with the most chromed of handgun.

I think we could all agree that "highjacking" has become an accepted colloquial term for surreptitiously diverting an item or entity from its intended course.

Whether that has actually happened in this circumstance as alleged, I DK.

A tax on crude oil securities ?---- Would that be on company stocks or futures contracts? I guess it is always popular to "tax the rich." And after looking at the comments I have to ask "what would be the ultimate purpose? To build more infrastructure than we need?" I think we need to first define what improvements we really need, as distinguished from pork barrel and patronage projects. Not that a discussion of how to pay for it cannot also proceed.

Analogy: If I were handing over the car keys to a teenager I would hope that he or she has learned how to follow the laws and drive safely.
