Lyon-to-Portland
Continuing our tradition of thought leadership here at Portland Transport, we've highlighted the bike rental/sharing program in Lyon, France a couple of times (here and here).
Now the Portland Mercury is reporting ("Yellow Bikes: Version 2.0, The Return of Bike Sharing?") that Roland Chlapowski in Sam Adams' office is working on getting such a program going here in Portland.
We'll keep offering encouragement.

Chris Smith Says:
I got beat up on my neighborhood listserv for saying this, but I'll do it again. My experience in Amsterdam (80% of the population bikes, no one wears helmets) has convinced me the an urban cyclist who stays off of high-speed arterials doesn't need a helmet.
Does a helmet improve safety? Sure ... and I could urge every pedestrian to where one too. But making a strong suggestion for helmets for low-speed cycling paints cycling as more dangerous than it is.
