Flexcar to Test Student Program at U of P
A reader just passed along this post at Metroblogging Portland. I think making Flexcar available to younger drivers is a great idea. Car sharing companies have been reluctant to do this because of higher insurance rates.

This is interesting, as a 4 year Flexcar member and half of a car-free couple we are all about getting more people hooked. However an even more glaring exclusion from FlexCar memebership are those who have (due to what ever circumstances) not needed a drivers License before. Currently prospective members (even as part of business accounts) must have a 5 year driving record to join!
An acquaintance of mine, who lived back east and then downtown portland, recently obtained her drivers license and will now have to buy or rent rather than being able to join flexcar.
I realize this is more an issue of the insurance company but it seems like a place to push for improvements, why let her get hooked on owning a car?
