Bicycles Outselling Cars!

I'm a subscriber to the 'carfree network' listserv. These folks are a little out there, even for this alternative mode activist. But every once in a while there's a real gem, like this link to an article suggesting that last year more bikes than cars were sold in the U.S.

The article attributes this to rising gas prices and notes that the last time so many bikes were sold was in the 1973!

Oh my god... I thought I would never see the day.

I particularly like the part where it says that the US government has done its part: $3.5 million in funding over the next 4 years for bike routes in the US.
I almost died laughing.

Justin, I think the writer of the article got it wrong - should have been "billion", not "million". Still not much -- about the cost of one good freeway interchange, per year, for a country's worth of bike projects.
